I’ve been fascinated by the reactions from friends, celebrities, and other coastal liberals to Paula Deen, ever since her announcement that she has Type 2 Diabetes and is endorsing a medication to treat it.
There seem to be two general responses to this:
1) That’s too bad—hope she uses her platform for good!
versus:
2) That fat fuck finally got what she deserved. How dare she make us sick and profit from it?

There’s a quote zipping around the internet from Mark Coatney, about how Tumblr wants to be “the most interesting party you’ve ever been at.” I love this idea because it sums up why I adore this place. Other social media sites are compared to cocktail parties, and I HATE COCKTAIL PARTIES! If you’re voting for Herman Cain, I want paragraphs to understand why.
And I love that here I meet folks like Jack King, an 80 year-old artist. He responded to a piece I wrote called “Is blogging art?” I was intrigued by his ideas, and started reading up on him.
NEAT GUY! Joined the Army at 16, toured North Africa with the Air Force, and went on to become a Psych professor and an artist. (Hat tip to Rock Springs for the intro.) I asked him if I could mention his age on my blog.
“The least relevant number often is one’s age,” he said. “Use it any way you like.”
HA. Anyway, the original point of this post was to share his definition of art, in case it illuminates anything for you like it did for me: “Art poses deeper questions rather than giving easier answers. The role of the artist in a liquid reality is to awaken all of our senses through creativity and love. Our quest is to live more fully in the liminal zone between heaven and earth, the old and the new.”
Once I learned what “liminality” means, I really loved it. Read it all here.

Oh Bloggy, I’ve missed you. I’m going to China today because a good friend is getting married in Beijing. Or “The Jing,” as I like to call it. So curious to see how decades of visiting American Chinatowns have prepared me for the World’s Biggest.
Whenever I hear “The People’s Republic of China,” I think of trendy jeans that would be sold only at Fred Segal. How sad for me.
It is my dream to get a picture with a scorpion at a Beijing farmer’s market. Oh, and to see the Great Wall.
I hope to be in touch soon, and I hope you all have a great holiday weekend and barbecue the heck of out summer. I will leave you with some things I’ve really enjoyed recently.
This is a postcard from RockSprings. I LOVE IT, OBVIOUSLY.

A critic of this blog has pointed out that I purport to want to leave my bubble, but often just prance around with progressives in other cities.
Today is not the day I prove her wrong.
That’s because I learned two important things yesterday:
1. Many of you really like Seattle a lot.
2. RockSprings and Away, Abaddon are in Seattle right now.
Clearly life is telling me to do a restaurant round-up of Seattle. And thus the “bougie” in the title of this post is me, not Seattle.
Here are five places I really enjoyed in the Emerald City.
Every time I read about Seattle, I am like, COME ON, SHOW ME THE MARKET!!! So I’ll get right to it.

I love how people go nuts when there is a fish sale.
