cory tells me about life as a musician in nashville

This is series in which you help me learn about America. I’ve been thrilled to hear from some of you, and hope to feature everyone who has expressed interest.

Cory Bishop is Nashville singer-songwriter who was born and raised in Irvine, California. What a treat to learn about his life! Especially since I’m kind of obsessed with Tennessee and know nothing about the music industry. Hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did.

jen tells me about figuring out her 30s

This is a new series in which you help me not be a dum-dum about America. I’ve been thrilled to hear from some of you, and hope to feature everyone who has expressed interest.

Jen, or as I like to think of her, “the Queen of Tumblr,” writes one of the sharpest, most honest blogs out there. She was born and raised in Michigan, and spent a decade in the suburbs of Detroit. She recently moved from Michigan to DC and was kind enough to talk to me about bartending, starting over, and so much more! I hope you enjoy her interview as much as I did.

rosemary tells me about life in appalachia, alabama, and beyond

This is a new series in which you help me not be a dum-dum about America. I’ve been thrilled to hear from some of you, and hope to feature everyone who has expressed interest.

Rosemary was born and raised in the foothills of Appalachia, in Minford, Ohio, a town so small it’s technically a “Census designated place.” Since then, she’s lived in Alabama and London and currently resides in Bloomington, Indiana, where she’s pursuing a PhD in mass communication. Rosemary was kind enough to tell me about her life, her travels, and radio production, and I hope you enjoy her interview as much as I did!

rosalie tells me about life in a small town in alaska

This is a series in which you help me not be a dum-dum about America.

Rosalie was born and raised in Boston, and now lives with her husband and two daughters in a small town in Alaska (population: 2,000).

I met Rosalie 13 years ago, when we were living in Paris. (In fact, she was the first friend I made there!) Back then, she was working in finance and was a nationally ranked boxer. In her spare time, she took intensive cooking courses at the Ecole Escoffier and learned to prepare venison.

I had the good fortune to visit Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, last week. I’ve been fascinated by BYU for years because of its Honor Code, which bans coffee consumption, smoking, drinking, premarital sex and other activities I associate with college.

an american by choice tells me about getting a green card, becoming bostonian, and more (part two)

image

Yesterday, I featured Part 1 of an interview with Gary, who was “born, bred, and baked in Trinidad,” and became an American citizen in 2009. Now he lives in Boston with his wife and two daughters. I loved hearing about his decision to become an American, and how he assimilated into New England. In fact, I am so inspired by his perspective, that I kind of want to be Gary! (This is Part 2 of a two-part interview.)

janet talks about working with refugees, turning 50, and more

This is a new series in which you help me not be a dum-dum about America. I’ve been thrilled to hear from some of you, and hope to feature everyone who has expressed interest.

Janet is a 56-year-old literacy worker, teaching teachers who work with refugees. She’s lived in New York City and Vancouver and made her way back to her home state of Rhode Island about 15 years ago. (Sidenote: she also leaves some fierce replies when she comments on blogs.) Janet was generous enough to talk to me about her life, turning 50, and America, and I hope you find her interview as interesting as I did!

texts from an audition for "the voice"

If you’re an American and have never been on a reality TV show, do you really exist? Probably not. That’s what my friend and I decided yesterday, while she was waiting in line (along with a few thousand other people) to audition for The Voice. I wish I could have been there, but I did have the joy of following along via her texts, which I got permission to share. (She is a phenomenal singer btw.)
