a southerner shares his thoughts on race relations, hicks, and barbecue

Last week I asked if you’d help me understand America. I was thrilled to hear from people, and hope to feature everyone who expressed interest. Today’s the first in the series.

Cullen is a 38-year old married father of three who lives in Memphis. He was born in rural Louisiana, and has lived everywhere from Arizona to Idaho to Mississippi (with a stint in Okinawa and a seven-month “vacation” in Afghanistan)—first as an Air Force brat, then as an Army soldier, and later, as a government civilian working for the Navy.

In his initial email he told me a little bit about his take on race relations in the South. I was impressed that he was willing to discuss this with me and had to know more! Luckily, Cullen was kind enough to elaborate. Hope you find his insights as interesting as I did!

anarchy & scotch explains everything → anarchyandscotch.tumblr.com

I keep waiting for the punchline of the Republican nomination battle. Surely, at some point, Ashton Kutcher is going to just walk out and tell us we’ve all been punked, right? Right?

This strikes a chord because I bought and read Herman Cain’s memoir.

Also, you can read the entire post from Anarchy & Scotch here. (It has nothing to do with politics.)

do you know something about america that i don't?

image

Yes! Ha! Of course you do!

One of my hopes in starting this blog was to “understand America.” Obviously, that’s a ridiculous quest, and a total fail according to all goal-setting literature, which advises you to set concrete aims and measurable benchmarks.

Does “understanding America” refer to Red States versus Blue States? Race relations? Mall of America? Conservatives? Southerners? Income Inequality? Ultimate Fighting?

Yes. I think it means all that. Mostly I want to be more open-minded, instead of being a liberal jackass who has a knee-jerk liberal reaction to everything.

blame it on evolution

When I was 19, a frat guy explained to me that men cheat because it’s how humans evolved. In primitive days, males who spread their seed were more likely to have healthy offspring than guys who risked it all with one mate.

At the time, I thought it was an interesting idea, because I hadn’t taken Anthropology in college. (And apparently, I hadn’t read a non-fiction book, either.) However, I soon realized that everyone blames every major human trend on evolution. Or teachers’ unions. We might as well blame gravity, because without it, we’d all fly away.

“…and so on we go, exploring the denomination, larger Christianity, faith in general and other Big Questions. You know what’s really hard about that? No. Scratch that. You know what’s really easy about that? Being glib. It’s really easy to turn the whole thing into some big chucklefest. It’s really easy to brush the whole thing aside with a dusting of you know, God, or whatever. What’s hard is being sincere.” —Way to say it, amywhipple!!! I so often appreciate what that lady has to say, and this is a good excuse to share my enthusiasm for her blog. You can read the whole post here.

can you imagine running 12 marathons blindfolded?

This is my friend EJ. We met in 2003 at an improv comedy theater in Los Angeles called IO West, where we both performed.

Now he’s legally blind because he has an inherited, degenerative disease called choroideremia, (pronounced ka-ROY-dah-REE-mee-yah). To raise awareness this year, he’s running 12 marathons in 12 cities, blindfolded.

Can you imagine?! I am so inspired and awed by him.

Besides the whole “marathon” thing, to run blindfolded, he has to rely on other people for 26.2 miles. I find this particularly amazing because I couldn’t even do a trust fall exercise in an improv class without cheating. I mean that literally. Basically I hemmed and hawed forever and finally just leaned on someone, but never actually fell at all, and then the teacher called it a day so the class could move on.
