mcdonald’s oatmeal: i'm likin it (aka "i'm sorry,...
I’m tired of hearing that sugar is the devil. I wish whoever first said that had been a little more nuanced, because really: sugar is the devil, if you overdo it on a regular basis. But why blame sugar? We could say the same thing about butter, or self-help books, or even hugs, if we were out to get them. Hugs are the devil.  I’m defensive because I love sugar so much. My morning coffee...

me versus the strand bookstore
Here’s a riddle: If a girl falls into mad consumerism in an independent bookstore, does it still count as consumerism?  I recently went to the Strand, which is one of those bookstores run by people who curate the selections so well that you forget none of the titles were on your mind when you entered. Everywhere you look, it feels like you’re reminded of your own good taste. (Jennifer...

10 things restaurant customers should know
Update: Colleen has some great points in the comments below and Glamsoda added several funny viewpoints here. Thanks, ladies!   ** Once I was at a group dinner and some people could not stop talking about how bad the service was. Essentially our waitress’s great crime was that she disappeared for long stretches of time (after she got our orders right). Do you understand the injustice? People had...

are dudes *really* confused about their role in...
For years, I’ve bought into the idea that American dudes are confused about their place in society. It started when I saw Fight Club and grew with articles like this, and most recently, after reading “Where Have All The Good Men Gone?” by Kay Hymowitz. As she explains:  “With women moving ahead in our advanced economy, husbands and fathers are now optional, and the qualities of character men...

an interview with the evilteabagger
Update: Barrett Garese has a thoughtful response in which he disagrees with many of the points in this interview. You can read it here.   ** I love when people surprise you. (Or rather: when you peg them the wrong way!) I certainly got the wrong idea about EvilTeabagger. He often blogs about his disdain for Obamacare and love of libertarianism. And I wrote to him recently because I’ve been...

do people take longer to grow up in new york city?...
Update: Ilya Gerner has an insightful response to this. Brought up a lot of smart points I didn’t address! Also: fun comments and notes! Thanks, y’all! ** Remember when I had a mission to leave my little liberal bubble? I really want to! (Just not in this post.) Recently I was catching up with some friends in the East Village. Like me, they’re all in their 30s. And it turns out a...

harlem walking tour!
I’ve been wanting to take a walking tour of Harlem for the past five years. And this weekend, I finally did. I am a woman of action. Also, I had family in town, and tours are great because they allow an independent third party to make decisions for the group. None of that trying-to-build-consensus-stuff. The tour guide’s in charge! What’s crazy is that I only live a few subway stops...
